A Look Back at an Iconic Career
Whether you know him as a Hawaii-based private eye, a suave doctor on a hit sitcom, or a dedicated New York City police commissioner, Tom Selleck’s career is packed with memorable roles across multiple generations.
His massive breakout came in 1980 when he took on the starring role of Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988). Wearing his iconic Hawaiian shirts and driving a red Ferrari 308 GTS, Selleck became an instant international superstar and pop-culture icon, earning both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for his performance.
On the big screen, Selleck led the box office in the massive 1987 blockbuster comedy Three Men and a Baby alongside Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg, as well as fan-favorite Westerns like Quigley Down Under (1990).
Younger television audiences fell in love with him all over again during the ’90s when he guest-starred on Friends as Dr. Richard Burke—Monica’s charm-filled older boyfriend—a role that earned him an Emmy nomination. Most recently, Selleck spent 14 seasons anchoring the hit police drama Blue Bloods (2010–2024) as NYC Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.
Off-screen, Selleck is a U.S. Army veteran who served in the California Army National Guard, a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a longtime avocado farmer living quietly on his California ranch.
