A Look Back at an Iconic Career

Garner first became a household name in the late 1950s starring as Bret Maverick in the hit TV Western series Maverick (1957–1960). On the big screen, Garner displayed incredible versatility. He starred in high-octane classics like The Great Escape (1963) and Grand Prix (1966), brought romantic comedy charm to The Americanization of Emily (1964) and Victor/Victoria (1982), and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Murphy’s Romance (1985). Younger audiences also fondly know him for playing the older Duke in the classic romantic drama The Notebook (2004).
